In 1975, Tom Bolling was a young art director at a small ad agency in Buffalo, New York. He hired a brash intern, Frank Costantini. Thirty years later, that brash intern was the first person Tom called when he had the opportunity to revive a struggling Fortune 500 brand.
After their time at Ellis, Singer & Webb, Tom and Frank’s careers went in different directions. Tom built and lead regional agencies, including The Wolf Group, in the Northeast and Canada. Frank advanced through the creative ranks at large global agencies, ultimately becoming the youngest-ever creative director at JWT.
In 2005, Tom sent a letter of unsolicited advice to the new CEO of then-struggling Winn-Dixie. When he was invited to a meeting with the CEO a few days later, he knew exactly whom he needed by his side – Frank. They wowed Winn-Dixie and shortly thereafter On Ideas was named agency of record.
Since then, On Ideas has grown consistently, adding clients such as BI-LO Holdings, the Catlin Group, the Jacksonville Jaguars and Enterprise Florida. What’s telling is that Tom and Frank’s first client, Winn-Dixie, remains a client to this day.
what’s up with the name?
When Tom and Frank started thinking about names for the agency, they didn’t want to use their own names because they wanted the agency to be recognized for the quality of its work, and not just the two founders. Thus, On Ideas. Talk about a constant motivation. As Tom likes to say, “When you’ve got ‘ideas’ in your name, you better have some pretty damn good ideas!”
Admittedly, there’s been some talk recently of changing our name. When West Herford was named Managing Partner in 2013, Frank suggested a 180 and putting the partners’ name on our business cards. West Thomas Frank has a tasty ring to it, doesn’t it? Get it?
Behind every great team is a great mascot, and you can consider Ozzie ours. Ozzie is Frank’s Australian Shepherd and he’s a heartbreaker with dazzling blue eyes. Ozzie has also starred in numerous TV commercials over the years.
In addition to Ozzie, visit us on any given day and you’ll likely have one of our team members’ 37 dogs nuzzling up to you. When you’re having a tough time with something, trust us – there’s no better antidote than a slobbery dog kiss.
how we think
if we could change the world
If our team members ran the world, things would be a lot different. We recently polled the office and asked folks what they’d do if they were Supreme Leader and could issue edicts:
We have four guiding principles, the very fabric of our culture.
We think they're worth sharing.
