RIP barcodes?

Since 1974, barcodes have been printed on product packaging, used in retail stores to make purchases, and employed in warehouses to track inventory. With a target date of 2027, GS1, the global barcode oversight organization, plans to introduce a new code on products that will look more like a QR code and will also be linked to the Internet. Not only cash registers but also consumers will be able to scan the code with their smartphones.
