This Thursday afternoon, I bet half of you will be dozing off after gorging yourselves on a sumptuous Thanksgiving meal. And I bet you’ve heard that it’s the tryptophan in turkey that puts you to sleep, right? Apparently, that’s an urban legend.
Turkey contains no more of the amino acid tryptophan than other kinds of poultry. In fact, turkey actually has slightly less tryptophan than chicken. Go figure.
So what makes us so sleepy? Plain and simple, digesting food takes up energy. When we overeat, the body gets tired quicker from working overtime.
